Charleston has a memory, and its alive in its people. A place, where the buildings themselves become monuments to commemorate the past, without the need of further statues or parks to do so. But it is not to be confused with “History” - the method use in modern societies to organize the past. Because history, can be read by and belong to everyone; it is more relative, contingent on chronology and scale.
It is about “Memory”; as it is passed down through the generations. It carries the authority of community members and experience. “It’s relation to the past is an embrace... ultimately emotional, not intellectual” (Bernard Bailyn). Currently, fabric are plentiful and various, it is hard to believe cloth as a rare commodity that was value so much that it became a medium of memories. But in ancestral times, families and culture were literally tie and woven into cloth and dependent upon it preservation. Cloth hold power through generations, and this power was pass down through ceremonies of investiture. In which woven objects became vehicles for succession of authority and memories.
